I made a 3 day bus trip into the outback. We started in Cairns and finished in Alice Springs. It was fascinating to see the landscape change from lush and tropical to dry and desert. The flies were brutal and it was about 115 degrees everyday. If I could do it again I’d probably fly and not go in the heat of summer.

The flies were really bad so I finally sold out and bought a fly net. I went about 4 days without one and spent most of my outdoor time swatting. I did meet a grizzled old man who had lived his whole life in the outback. He never even flinched when a fly landed in his eye.
Much of the trip was on a dirt road with nothing around.
